Police are investigating dozens of suspected #forcedmarriages in Australia… and almost all of them involve girls younger than 18 – and one who is just NINE

The Australian Federal Police are investigating the allegations, adding to the other 33 other cases they are looking into across the country since forced marriages were criminalised in 2013. In the past 12 months, a total of 28 referrals have been received by AFP and 21 have been further investigated, according to a statement provided to Daily Mail Australia.

Out of the 42 reports police had received from the community about suspected cases of forced marriages, they had whittled them down to 34 to pursue further.

Almost 30 of the cases had been involved a child under 18 years of age.

An AFP spokeswoman confirmed officers were looking into the suspected case of the nine-year-old but no more information could be provided as investigations were ongoing.

Student ‘in hiding after abuse’

A frightened student is at a “confidential address” after her parents abused her following concerns about her “westernised behaviour”, a family court judge has been told.

The woman’s father had told her “I am going to kill you now”, and said she needed to “die in a religious state”, Mr Justice Hayden heard. She had called police and left the family home with the help of officers when her parents were out, her lawyer said.

Barrister Katy Chokowry said the woman’s parents did not like her wearing leggings because they were “western clothing”.

She said the woman, who worked part-time at a McDonald’s restaurant to help her finance her studies, was “in fear for her safety”. Detail of the case emerged late today at a hearing in the Family Division of the High Court in London. The woman was not identified and Ms Chokowry did not give details of her nationality or religion.

But she said the woman was in her 20s, had arrived in the UK several years ago, had a boyfriend in Pakistan and was studying at a university. Mr Justice Hayden was told that there were fears that the woman would be made to marry “the son of a family friend” and he made an order preventing the woman’s parents from forcing her to marry.

How Spain’s minimum marrying age compares with the rest of Europe

Spain appears poised to raise the minimum marrying age from 14 to 16, in a move aimed at protecting children from forced marriages and exploitation.  On Tuesday a parliamentary justice commission passed new legislation under which 14- and 15-year-olds will no longer be able to marry. The draft law will now go to the senate for debate.

The United Nations Demographic yearbook 2013 published a table showing the minimum legal age at which marriage can take place both with parental consent and without.

Women call for laws to fight forced marriage in U.S.

Mariam was a sixth-grader in Toronto when her family started pressuring her to get engaged. They sent her on a summer trip to their native Pakistan, ostensibly to study but actually to meet a fiance chosen by her aunt. When she protested after returning home, she said, her mother kept insisting and wearing her down.

“She cried a lot. She prayed loudly to God that I would change. She refused to speak to me for days. She told me the family’s honor was at stake,” recounted Mariam, now 20, who asked that her last name not be published. “I wanted to finish school and go to college, but at times I almost said yes, just so she would stop crying.”

Finally, when she turned 17, Mariam decided to leave home — an unthinkable act in her culture. With encouragement from a women’s rights group, she slipped out early one morning, taking a small bag. No shelter would accept her, because she had not been physically abused, and she felt wracked with guilt and loneliness. Eventually, though, she found housing, friends and a measure of emotional independence.

Today, Mariam is active in a growing movement in the United States and Canada to promote public awareness and legal protections for victims of forced marriage. She visited Washington last week as part of a nationwide tour organized by the Tahirih Justice Center, a legal aid and advocacy group in the Virginia suburbs that helps immigrant women facing abuse.

UN, Malaysia Groups Seek to Repeal Fatwa Requiring FGM

BANGKOK—

In 2009, Malaysia’s National Fatwa Committee, the nation’s top Islamic council, required all Muslim women in the country to undergo female genital mutilation, otherwise known as female circumcision.

A recent study indicated that nearly all Muslim women in the country have had the procedure. But now the United Nations is working with the Committee to repeal ruling that made it mandatory.

Government health officials who are in negotiations with Malaysia’s National Fatwa Committee say the ruling by the country’s top religious authority requiring female genital cutting for all Muslim women may be overturned.

The World Health Organization defines any type of invasive procedure in the female genital area as mutilation, and subdivides practices into four types of increasing severity. It has banned them all.

‘Married at 15 to a man twice your age’ – ads against under-age marriage target migrants

The New South Wales Government’s “Child Not Bride” campaign features an advertisement with two smiling schoolgirls.

It asks the question, “What girl dreams of being married at 15 to a man twice her age that she has never met?”

It goes on to emphasise that “being forced to marriage under-age ruins a girl’s future and is against the law in Australia.”

The advertisement is being printed in ethnic newspapers and through digital media, and a radio advertisement is also being produced in community languages.

Halo tackles forced marriage

VICTIMS of forced marriage and so-called honour-based violence are to get extra support, under a new project launched today (Friday, January 23).

The Halo project is being funded in County Durham and Darlington by Police and Crime Commissioner Ron Hogg and was launched at The Durham Centre, on Belmont Industrial Estate, Durham.

It is aimed at ensuring victims of forced marriage and honour-based violence get the support and advice they need.

Among those attending the launch with Mr Hogg were the North East Chief Crown Prosecutor Gerry Wareham, Halo’s Yasmine Khan and victims of such crimes.

The event included the unveiling of a student Halo campaign, aimed at raising awareness of such issues among young people.
