Statement from Yasmin Khan, Founder of the Halo Project and Wales Government Advisor

“The discovery of remains near the A19 during the search for Rania is a tragic and harrowing reminder of the devastating consequences of honour-based abuse. While we await official identification, our thoughts remain with Rania’s family and all those affected by such horrific crimes.

Honour-based abuse is a hidden yet pervasive form of violence, affecting thousands across the UK. Despite legal frameworks such as the Forced Marriage Act (2007) and Domestic Abuse Act (2021), gaps remain in early identification and intervention. Too often, victims are failed by systems that do not recognie the warning signs or act with urgency.

This case reinforces the urgent need for improved safeguarding, specialist training for frontline professionals, and greater collaboration between government, police and specialist by and for providers such as the Halo Project Charity.  We must ensure that no more lives are lost due to cultural justifications for abuse. The government must commit to a robust national strategy that prioritises prevention, protection, and prosecution.

The Halo Project will continue to fight for justice and push for systemic change, ensuring that victims of honour-based abuse are seen, heard, and protected before it is too late.”

We are here to help.
