Help Us Change the Law on Honour-Based Abuse Suicides
We are proud to have launched the Say Her Name campaign in partnership with Dr Maz Idriss and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Launched on 14 July, the Day of Memory, the campaign calls for urgent action to address a hidden crisis: women and girls dying by suicide as a result of honour-based abuse.

A hidden crisis that cannot be ignored
Our new policy briefing, Honour-Based Suicides: Shaping Criminal Law, estimates that around three women every week die by suicide following honour-based abuse.
These deaths are too often recorded as individual tragedies, without recognising the pattern of coercion, control, threats, and abuse that may have led to them.
When honour-based abuse is overlooked, opportunities to protect others are missed, lessons are not learned, and perpetrators may never be held accountable.
Every woman deserves to have her story recognised.
Why the law needs to change
Current criminal law does not adequately address situations where sustained honour-based abuse contributes to a person’s death.
Too often, investigations focus on the victim’s mental health rather than examining the abusive behaviour that preceded their death.
Through the Say Her Name campaign, we are calling for reforms that better reflect the realities faced by victims and survivors.
Our campaign calls for:
- Better recording of honour-based abuse-related suicides within national data.
- Improved police investigations that consider honour-based abuse as part of every relevant case.
- A new statutory offence recognising when harassment, violence, or abuse drives someone to take their own life.
These changes would strengthen accountability, improve safeguarding, and help prevent future deaths.
