A trans man says\u00a0he was tricked by his parents\u00a0into going to India, where they arranged a sham marriage in an effort to \u201cfix\u201d him.<\/p>\n
19-year-old Shivy (pictured) is an Indian citizen but has lived in California since three. He\u2019s currently\u00a0enrolled in the Neurobiology\u00a0Program\u00a0at UC\u00a0Davis.<\/p>\n
In June, he and\u00a0his mother got into an argument after\u00a0he cut his hair short. As a result, Shivy\u2019s mother confiscated\u00a0his phone. Going through his text messages, she learned\u00a0Shivy\u00a0was transgender and that he had a girlfriend.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was furious,\u201d Shivy recalls\u00a0in a video uploaded to YouTube, \u201cand I didn\u2019t feel safe at all.\u201d<\/p>\n
Not long after that,\u00a0his\u00a0mother told him his grandmother in India had suddenly become very ill and that he needed to go be with her. Shivy agreed. But halfway through what was supposed to be a\u00a0two week trip, his\u00a0family told him he not be returning to the U.S. Instead,\u00a0he was being forced into an arranged marriage with another man in an effort to change\u00a0him.<\/p>\n
