{"id":649,"date":"2014-10-15T13:36:09","date_gmt":"2014-10-15T13:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=649"},"modified":"2021-12-01T14:36:34","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T14:36:34","slug":"anti-fgm-activist-fahma-mohamed-wins-young-campaigner-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/anti-fgm-activist-fahma-mohamed-wins-young-campaigner-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-FGM activist Fahma Mohamed wins young campaigner award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol schoolgirl Fahma Mohamed, the face of a Guardian-backed campaign to raise awareness of female genital mutilation in schools, has been awarded Good Housekeeping\u2019s outstanding young campaigner of the year award.<\/p>\n<p>The award recognises \u201can extraordinary young woman\u2019s determination and campaigning spirit, in her commitment to preventing the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) and warnings to protect girls across the UK\u201d, said the organisers, who presented the 17-year-old with the award at an event in London on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Mohamed was the face of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #005689;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/end-fgm\">EndFGM Guardian campaign<\/a>\u00a0that launched in February and called on the then education secretary, Michael Gove, to write to all teachers in England and Wales, warning them of the dangers of FGM.<\/p>\n<p>Within three weeks, her\u00a0<a style=\"color: #005689;\" title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/educationgovuk-tell-schools-to-teach-risks-of-female-genital-mutilation-before-the-summer-endfgm\">petition on Change.org<\/a>\u00a0had attracted more than 230,000 signatures and garnered the public support of Pakistani girls\u2019 education campaigner Malala Yousafzai and the UN secretary general, Ban Ki-moon, who said he had been inspired after meeting Mohamed.<\/p>\n<p>Read more:\u00a0http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2014\/oct\/13\/fahma-mohamed-anti-fgm-wins-good-housekeeping-award<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bristol schoolgirl Fahma Mohamed, the face of a Guardian-backed campaign to raise awareness of female genital mutilation in schools, has been awarded Good Housekeeping\u2019s outstanding young campaigner of the year award.
