{"id":557,"date":"2014-04-22T13:38:56","date_gmt":"2014-04-22T13:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=557"},"modified":"2014-04-22T13:38:56","modified_gmt":"2014-04-22T13:38:56","slug":"girl-commits-suicide-after-being-forced-to-marry-her-rapist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/girl-commits-suicide-after-being-forced-to-marry-her-rapist\/","title":{"rendered":"Girl Commits Suicide After Being Forced To Marry Her Rapist"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>A 16-year-old Moroccan girl has committed suicide after a judge ordered her to marry her rapist, according to Moroccan media reports.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Last year Amina al-Filali\u2019s parents filed charges against their daughter\u2019s rapist, a man 10 years older than her but it was only recently that a judge in the northern city of Tangier decided that instead of punishing him, the two must be married.<\/p>\n<div>The court\u2019s decision to forcibly marry Amina to her rapist was supposed to \u201cresolve\u201d the damage of sexual violation against her, but it led to more suffering in the unwelcoming home of her rapist\/husband\u2019s family.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cAfter I filed a complaint against him, he said he will marry her. And when he married her and took her to his family&#8217;s home he mistreated her, beating her and leaving her starve with no food,\u201d Zahra Mallim, Amina\u2019s mother told the Morocco&#8217;s 2M TV.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Traumatized by the painful experience of rape, Amina decided to end her life by consuming rat poison in the house of her husband\u2019s family, according to the Moroccan daily al-Massae.\u00a0According to the newspaper, this type of forced marriage is rooted in local rural traditions to safeguard the honor of girls who are raped.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Moroccan penal code exempts a rapist from punishment if he agrees to marry his victim.\u201cWhen the judge said they will marry, I did not agree, but I could not challenge the law.
