{"id":480,"date":"2014-01-22T13:10:12","date_gmt":"2014-01-22T13:10:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=480"},"modified":"2014-01-20T13:11:39","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T13:11:39","slug":"londoners-are-morally-ambiguous-about-forced-marriage-experts-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/londoners-are-morally-ambiguous-about-forced-marriage-experts-warn\/","title":{"rendered":"Londoners are &#8216;morally ambiguous&#8217; about forced marriage, experts warn"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Too many young Londoners are\u00a0 \u201cmorally ambiguous\u201d about forced marriage and must be taught about human rights, campaigners warned today.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A new study of the views of young people from immigrant families found some believe forced marriage can be \u201cgood\u201d for women and is done with their best interests at heart.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers found that while the same group of young Londoners are against female genital mutilation, there is more acceptance of\u00a0 forced marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Naana Otoo-Oyortey, executive\u00a0director of the charity FORWARD, which commissioned the report, said many people still support the supposed reasons why forced marriage happens, such as protecting virginity.<\/p>\n<p>The report concluded that raising awareness of \u201cthe absolute nature of human rights\u201d is vital in combatting both forced marriage and FGM.
