Calgary police and educators are learning about how to recognize and deal with\u00a0honour-based violence.<\/p>\n
Social agencies say such violence is prevalent in the city and often involves child and spousal abuse.<\/p>\n
“What we see, what makes it into the news, is simply the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these types of issues,”\u00a0says John\u00a0Winterdyk, president of the Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association.<\/p>\n
The two-day conference is sponsored by Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association\u00a0and includes police,\u00a0teachers, lawyers,\u00a0health-care\u00a0workers and judges.\u00a0Aruna\u00a0Papp, the keynote speaker on Monday, agrees that most honour-based crimes still go unreported.\u00a0“How do we prevent it? We are not training the professionals.\u00a0There always seems to be less funding,” she said.<\/p>\n
Papp is a victim of honour-based violence, which is defined by organizers in a press release as violence that \u201cstems from a matrix of cultural values premised on women’s inferiority.\u201d\u00a0Papp\u00a0says it happens when girls and women who are\u00a0new to the country embrace Canadian values.\u00a0“They go to school and they are taught that you can think for yourself, you can make decisions for yourself, you can choose your spouse, you can choose your career,” she said.<\/p>\n
