{"id":1950,"date":"2021-11-18T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2021-11-18T14:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1950"},"modified":"2022-07-21T17:28:33","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T16:28:33","slug":"marriage-hell-my-abusive-arranged-husband-kicked-me-so-hard-our-baby-died-threatened-to-torch-our-house-after-i-refused-an-abortion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/marriage-hell-my-abusive-arranged-husband-kicked-me-so-hard-our-baby-died-threatened-to-torch-our-house-after-i-refused-an-abortion\/","title":{"rendered":"Marriage Hell: My abusive arranged husband kicked me so hard our baby died &#038; threatened to torch our house after I refused an abortion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1951\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/pexels-baljit-johal-6387657-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PEERING out of her bedroom window at the 12ft drop below, Tina Kenworthy uttered terrifying instructions that would send a chill through any parent: \u201cThrow the quilt down and jump!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The frightened mum was teaching her sons how to escape their three-bedroom home in Leicester, in case her \u201cmonster husband&#8221; carried out his vile threat to burn down their house with them inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina, 49, had every reason to fear he&#8217;d go through with it &#8211; she claims he&#8217;d already dragged her down the stairs by her hair, beaten her up and kicked her in the stomach while she was pregnant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After meeting her husband just twice, she was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/13209283\/shocking-pictures-girl-forced-marriage-philippines\/\">pressured into marrying him<\/a>&nbsp;when she was 23.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina fell pregnant two months later, and says she noticed a radical change in his personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time their fourth son was born in 2007, she claims he was drinking excessively and taking drugs &#8211; and if she refused to have sex with him, he would attack her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 13 years of &#8220;torment&#8221;, Tina finally separated from her husband, but was dealt a devastating final blow \u2013 he left her in \u00a340,000 of debt.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer service team leader Tina has finally found happiness with a new partner, despite her family struggling to accept him at first because he wasn&#8217;t &#8220;chosen&#8221; for her and came from a different community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She hopes by sharing her experience, it will encourage others in situations like hers to seek help and find a way out of abusive relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina tells The Sun: &#8220;I felt like there was no escape. My husband became controlling very early on in our marriage and when he started to drink he would hit me for no reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI tried to leave him multiple times and fled to women\u2019s refuges but I didn\u2019t feel strong enough or able to leave him for good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the worst times was when I was pregnant with our second child. He wanted me to have an abortion but I couldn\u2019t do it and he turned really, really nasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe kicked me in the stomach so hard that my baby stopped moving. Even after I had a stillbirth, I didn\u2019t feel I could report how he was treating me to the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnother time in the early hours of the morning, he grabbed a chunk of my hair and pulled me down the stairs to the kitchen because I refused to cook for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt that time I was having panic attacks in the middle of the night and slept with my bedroom door locked and a knife under my pillow just so I could feel safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had to teach our boys how to jump out of the window because he threatened to set our house on fire while we were sleeping to burn us all alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He kicked me in the stomach so hard that my baby stopped moving<strong>Tina Kenworthy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring the worst parts of the marriage, I considered suicide because I couldn\u2019t see another way out but I knew I couldn\u2019t leave my boys with such a monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a miracle I survived and thankfully, I\u2019ve now found a husband who truly loves me. I\u2019m still dealing with the emotional abuse but I\u2019m thriving and getting my life back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pressured into marriage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina, who&#8217;s a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/7351291\/when-navratri-meaning-hindu-festival-fasting\/\">Hindu<\/a>, says the fear of \u201cbringing shame\u201d upon her family prevented her from feeling able to leave her husband sooner and her relatives often stressed divorce \u201cwas not an option\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She was born in a small village in Shahkot in Punjab, India, and two years after moving to Britain in 1993, she returned to marry a stranger 18 months her senior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She claims it wasn\u2019t a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/6259630\/forced-marriage-expat-children-pensioner\/\">forced marriage<\/a>&nbsp;but it was \u201crushed\u201d and she didn\u2019t have time to get to know her future husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After returning to the UK she soon began to feel \u201ctrapped\u201d by her husband&#8217;s increasingly manipulative behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After losing her second child in June 1997, Tina&#8217;s mental health nosedived and she became reliant on antidepressants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to her husband controlling their finances, she struggled to find a way out of their marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I couldn\u2019t say no to him, if I did he would beat me up or tell my family I was not being a good wife<strong>Tina Kenworthy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explains: \u201cI was looking for a way to escape and the only way I knew how was to improve my education so that I could become financially independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I started university he became even more aggressive because he was losing control over my life and doors were opening up for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn his eyes, he had control over my body. We were sleeping in separate rooms and he would force himself on me regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI couldn\u2019t say no to him, if I did he would beat me up or tell my family I was not being a good wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Due to him being a man they would take his side nine out of 10 times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Masked abuse<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina claims her ex-husband would put on a front while visiting her relatives and played happy families so they would never suspect a thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was so manipulative, we would have a fight and then in front of my family he would be laughing, smiling and telling them how much he loved me,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina claims she called the police at least 15 times during their marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn 2003, he was charged with actual bodily harm for assaulting me really badly, but pleaded guilty to common assault,\u201d she recalls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt that time he was truly horrible to live with, when he was drunk he would shout, scream and threaten to break the door down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn our culture, when you\u2019re married you are your husband\u2019s responsibility, which leaves so many ladies and young girls trapped in abusive relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2008, Tina finally left her husband after receiving advice from a women\u2019s refuge about how to get a divorce and apply for financial assistance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was so manipulative, we would have a fight and then in front of my family he would be laughing, smiling and telling them how much he loved me<strong>Tina Kenworthy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She underwent a support recovery programme from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/hopetraining.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Helping Other People Everyday (H.O.P.E.) Training<\/a>, which helped her to work through the trauma she endured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really proud of what I\u2019ve achieved, I\u2019m empowered and believe in myself more than ever thanks to the counselling I\u2019ve received,\u201d Tina says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are bad days but I have worked to become independent, mentally stronger and able to cope financially.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since their divorce was finalised in 2012, Tina claims she has not seen her ex-husband after he &#8220;fled&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLooking back I\u2019m a much stronger person now and despite him taking out \u00a340,000 in personal loans, I\u2019m working to pay off what we owe,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Finding love again<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Tina slowly pieced her life back together, she joined the online dating site eharmony in 2014.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A year later she met Andrew Kenworthy and the relationship was a world away from what she&#8217;d experienced in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They married in 2017, and Tina says she now knows what a loving relationship feels like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have arguments like any couple but we listen to each other, can give our opinions without fear and speak honestly with one another,&#8221; she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy boys see it too and tell me, \u2018Mum, you deserve this.\u2019 When I look back now I feel like I\u2019m lucky to be alive and to have found such happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honour-based abuse on the rise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abuse after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/4091357\/what-is-honour-killing-murder-uk\/\">arranged and forced marriages<\/a>&nbsp;have come into the spotlight after a spike in recorded crimes across the country.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New figures reveal that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/16682937\/honour-based-abuse-uk-crime\/\">\u2018honour-based\u2019 violence has risen 81 per cent<\/a>&nbsp;in the last five years \u2013 from 884 in 2016 to 1,599 last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data, which came from 28 out of 39 constabularies after freedom of information requests by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2021\/oct\/31\/honour-based-offences-soared-by-81-in-last-five-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, didn&#8217;t surprise several charities who spoke to The Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They said the true extent of the problem is considerably worse than the figures suggest because many people do not feel safe reporting abuse.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meena Kumari, of H.O.P.E. Training, and Yasmin Khan from The Halo Project, are calling for more to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believe this rise is the tip of the iceberg,&#8221; Meena tells The Sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She believes specialist training should be compulsory for all police officers, constables and volunteers and a national strategy to ensure all crimes of this type are recorded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meena also has called for more funding to investigate the &#8220;low number of charges and fall in conviction rates&#8221; to work out how best to help victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yasmin echoes these calls for better training to recognise the abuse and more assistance for those trying to leave abusive partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that between 12 and 15 people die each year in the UK from so-called \u201chonour killings\u201d \u2013 but Yasmin insists that figure is \u201ca huge underestimation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the victims is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/12787218\/who-banaz-mahmod-cause-of-death\/\">Banaz Mahmod<\/a>&nbsp;whose family&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/fabulous\/9717741\/banaz-mahmod-honour-killing-police-failures\/\">plotted her murder<\/a>&nbsp;in 2006 after she left an allegedly abusive marriage and chose a partner of her own choosing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yasmin says: \u201cFamilies will not report a missing man or woman to the police and there are also people who have been taken abroad and killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome will go to great lengths to protect their family\u2019s honour, including hiring bounty hunters.
