{"id":1692,"date":"2020-06-08T09:00:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T08:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1692"},"modified":"2022-10-17T16:30:37","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T15:30:37","slug":"news-world-middle-east-egyptian-father-used-coronavirus-lie-to-trick-daughters-into-fgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/news-world-middle-east-egyptian-father-used-coronavirus-lie-to-trick-daughters-into-fgm\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle East Egyptian father \u2018used coronavirus lie\u2019 to trick daughters into FGM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A man has been accused of tricking his daughters into undergoing female genital mutilation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fgm\">FGM<\/a>) after telling them the doctor was visiting for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/coronavirus\">coronavirus<\/a>&nbsp;vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/Egypt\">Egypt<\/a>&nbsp;have said they will prosecute the father of the three girls &#8211; all minors &#8211; who have claimed they were misled into having the procedure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The children were expecting to be vaccinated against&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/covid-19\">Covid-19<\/a>, but were instead injected with a drug that knocked them out and then operated on, the public prosecutor\u2019s office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mother \u2013 who is divorced from their father \u2013 notified authorities after the girls told her what had happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Egypt criminalised FGM in 2016, after the practice was banned eight years before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The public prosecutor\u2019s office said it has \u201cordered the referral\u201d of the doctor \u2013 charged with performing the procedure \u2013 and father \u2013 charged with assisting him in the alleged crime \u2013 \u201cto an urgent criminal trial\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors who carry out FGM can now be jailed for up to seven years in Egypt.
