ERBIL, Kurdistan Region \u2013 It\u2019s time to shatter the silence around violence against women in the Kurdistan Region. That\u2019s the message of an exhibit that opens Monday in Erbil and is both a memorial to the women killed in 2019 and a tribute to the people working on the front line helping Kurdistan\u2019s women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t talk about rape. We don\u2019t talk about honour killing. We don\u2019t talk about violence, because it\u2019s taboo,\u201d explained artist and activist Dashni Morad, the driving force behind the HERStory exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That taboo comes from the culture, Morad believes. \u201cFor decades, especially in an Islamic-dominated region\u2026 the honour of the woman is the honour of the family, the brother, the father.\u201d If a woman does something deemed damaging to the family\u2019s honour, \u201cthere\u2019s an unspoken code of \u2018take care of it\u2019\u201d and the community will turn a blind eye to the crime, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
