It sends a message to communities that you can almost get away with it\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Convictions for so-called\u00a0<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/honour-abuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9001321-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/honour-abuse\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">honour\u00a0crimes<\/a>\u00a0perpetrated against women have\u00a0plummeted in the past five years,<em>\u00a0The Independent<\/em>\u00a0can reveal, amid a\u00a0<a class=\"body-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/crime\/forced-marriage-uk-victims-gay-countries-airports-police-help-a9006006.html\" data-vars-item-name=\"BL-9001321-https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/crime\/forced-marriage-uk-victims-gay-countries-airports-police-help-a9006006.html\" data-vars-event-id=\"c6\">nationwide crackdown<\/a>\u00a0aimed at bringing those responsible to justice.<\/p>\n<p>The offences\u00a0include coercive control, forced marriage and subsequent repeated rape,\u00a0female genital mutilation (FGM), assault, threats to kill, attempted murder and even murder itself.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mpu0ArticleBody\" class=\"ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--mobile ad-wrapper--mpu0\"><\/div>\n<p>Figures from the Crown Prosecution Service show that successful prosecutions for crimes of honour-based abuse\u00a0fell from\u00a0123 in 2013-14 to just 71 in 2017-18.<\/p>\n<p>In an acknowledgement of the problem, a national campaign was launched this week \u2013 at the start of the summer school holidays \u2013 that saw police officers descend on airports across Britain to question families travelling to and from countries where the practices are prevalent.<\/p>\n<div id=\"teads-amp-ad\" class=\"ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--mobile\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"inline-block ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--apester ad-wrapper--desktop\">\n<div class=\"apester-media apester-element\" data-token=\"5bbe30dfc3ecd7c158342081\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/honour-crimes-women-fgm-murder-abuse-convictions-cps-a9001321.html\">https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/honour-crimes-women-fgm-murder-abuse-convictions-cps-a9001321.html<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Exclusive: \u2018Perpetrators are not being held to account.
