{"id":1616,"date":"2019-01-21T15:41:39","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T15:41:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1616"},"modified":"2019-01-21T15:41:39","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T15:41:39","slug":"landmark-overhaul-for-domestic-abuse-laws","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/landmark-overhaul-for-domestic-abuse-laws\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Landmark&#8217; overhaul for domestic abuse laws"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Domestic abuse victims will receive a wide range of new measures to protect them in what ministers say will be landmark legislation.<\/p>\n<p>New laws will for the first time create a legal definition of domestic abuse, to include economic abuse and control.<\/p>\n<p>The long-awaited legislation will also ban abusers from cross-examining victims in family courts.<\/p>\n<p>Campaigners say the measures are a &#8220;once in a generation&#8221; opportunity to combat the impact of abuse.<\/p>\n<p>Government experts estimate domestic abuse cost society \u00a366bn in 2016\/17 and it&#8217;s hoped the changes will improve the response.<\/p>\n<p>The draft bill going before MPs will also:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Create new powers to force perpetrators into behaviour-changing rehabilitation programmes<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Make victims automatically eligible for special protections when they are giving evidence in criminal trials<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Set up a national &#8220;domestic abuse commissioner&#8221; tasked with improving the response and support for victims across public services<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-46939735\">https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-46939735<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Domestic abuse victims will receive a wide range of new measures to protect them in what ministers say will be landmark legislation.
