{"id":1585,"date":"2018-10-07T16:30:14","date_gmt":"2018-10-07T15:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1585"},"modified":"2018-10-07T16:30:14","modified_gmt":"2018-10-07T15:30:14","slug":"fgm-awareness-campaign-launched-across-uk-as-illegal-practice-remains-cloaked-in-secrecy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/fgm-awareness-campaign-launched-across-uk-as-illegal-practice-remains-cloaked-in-secrecy\/","title":{"rendered":"FGM awareness campaign launched across UK as illegal practice remains &#8216;cloaked in secrecy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A campaign raising awareness of the dangers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/female-genital-mutilation-fgm-england-wales-statistics-crime-prevent-a8558221.html\">female genital mutilation<\/a>\u00a0(FGM) has been launched by the government as the practice remains \u201ccloaked in secrecy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>As\u00a0many as 100,000 women and girls in the UK are estimated to have undergone the illegal procedure, but a fraction of that number have disclosed it to the NHS.<\/p>\n<div id=\"mpu0ArticleBody\" class=\"ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--mobile ad-wrapper--mpu0\"><\/div>\n<p>Despite the strengthening of laws, there has not yet been a successful prosecution over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/fgm\">FGM\u00a0<\/a>and campaigners have said education will be a more effective way of stopping the practice.<\/p>\n<p>Police operations\u00a0have focused on preventing girls being taken abroad to undergo FGM, but a survivor told\u00a0<i>The Independent t<\/i>hat\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/crime\/fgm-uk-female-genital-mutilation-countries-girls-children-cutters-flight-survivor-police-a8560306.html\">\u201ccutters\u201d are also being flown into the UK to carry out procedures to order<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"teads-amp-ad\" class=\"ad-wrapper ad-wrapper--mobile\"><\/div>\n<p>Hoda Ali, an activist who works in safeguarding in the London borough of Ealing, said: \u201cThe reality is we need to open our eyes. We don\u2019t need to think just about far-away countries because right now we have girls who are in their late teens or even early 20s who were cut in this country.
