{"id":1552,"date":"2018-07-17T16:28:20","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T15:28:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1552"},"modified":"2018-07-17T16:28:20","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T15:28:20","slug":"arrests-and-prosecutions-alone-will-not-end-the-problem-of-fgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/arrests-and-prosecutions-alone-will-not-end-the-problem-of-fgm\/","title":{"rendered":"Arrests and prosecutions alone will not end the problem of FGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arrests and prosecutions alone will not end the problem of FGM, said a police inspector speaking at the National FGM Centre\u2019s annual conference, this week.<\/p>\n<p>More preventative work with affected communities is needed in order to end the harmful practice, the audience heard.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector Allen Davis, from the Metropolitan Police Service, told the audience: \u201cThere are a number of challenges to securing convictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProsecutions alone aren\u2019t going to change anything. They are symbolic but we\u2019re not going to be able to arrest our way out of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut prosecutions do send out a very strong message to communities that it\u2019s illegal and they act as a deterrent for people thinking about taking their daughter abroad to undergo FGM, or having it done in this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said barriers to reporting FGM to the police include children being unlikely to \u2018tell on their parents\u2019, or being too young to remember what happened and professionals failing to report information.<\/p>\n<p>Difficulties in securing a conviction include issues such as pressure from the community on the family involved, and the challenge to secure an admission of guilt, said Inspector Davis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charitytoday.co.uk\/arrests-and-prosecutions-alone-will-not-end-the-problem-of-fgm\/\">https:\/\/www.charitytoday.co.uk\/arrests-and-prosecutions-alone-will-not-end-the-problem-of-fgm\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arrests and prosecutions alone will not end the problem of FGM, said a police inspector speaking at the National FGM Centre\u2019s annual conference, this week.
