When the day came, my great-grandmother was holding me tight on her bed,\u201d said 26-year-old \u201cSH\u201d, a law student cited in the report, recalling how she had been cut at the age of seven.<\/p>\n<p>She remembers \u201csitting on the toilet, crying of unbearable pain, too scared to even pee\u201d. Her mother had reassured her that \u201ceveryone in the building has undergone this procedure\u201d, referring to the blocks of flats in Byculla, in the heart of Mumbai, where the Bohra Muslim community has lived for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Her account and those of 83 women and 11 men across five Indian states are included in the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wespeakout.org\/site\/assets\/files\/1439\/fgmc_study_results_jan_2018.pdf\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">first-ever study<\/a>\u00a0about female genital mutilation (FGM) in India, compiled by three independent researchers and a coalition of Bohra women against FGM.<\/p>\n<p>The qualitative research, which was released in February, shows the prevalence of FGM among India\u2019s Bohra Muslims \u2013 75% of respondents said they had subjected their daughters to the practice.
