{"id":1427,"date":"2017-10-19T11:17:42","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T10:17:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1427"},"modified":"2017-10-19T11:17:42","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T10:17:42","slug":"youngsters-in-waltham-forest-encouraged-to-use-art-to-tackle-extremism-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/youngsters-in-waltham-forest-encouraged-to-use-art-to-tackle-extremism-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Youngsters in Waltham Forest encouraged to use art to tackle extremism online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ASPIRING artists are putting their skills to good use by launching a project to tackle the threat of extremism online.<\/p>\n<p>Arts Against Extremism is a youth-led project aimed at supporting people aged 16 to 21 to become activists, flooding social media with positive messages about their communities.<\/p>\n<p>Created in partnership by the Arts Council, Waltham Forest Council and the Home Office, the project was launched on Saturday October 14 at Centre17 in Church Hill, Walthamstow.<\/p>\n<p>Cllr Sharon Waldron, cabinet member for community safety and cohesion, said the aim is to give every young person in the borough the encouragement to become a \u201cvoice for social change\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-female genital mutilation (FGM) campaigner Hibo Wardere of Walthamstow praised the \u201cpioneering project\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt recognises the wider harms of extremism, including FGM, and aims to engage youths in becoming a positive voice that stands up against it. \u201cI will be following the project\u2019s every move online and supporting it wherever I can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The launch of the project follows the Home Office\u2019s findings from March 2017 identifying 126,000 tweets containing extremist messages and the rise of \u2018fake news\u2019 and \u2018trolling\u2019 on social media.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.guardian-series.co.uk\/news\/15603977.Project_encourages_youngsters_to_use_art_to_tackle_extremism_online\/<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASPIRING artists are putting their skills to good use by launching a project to tackle the threat of extremism online.
