{"id":1411,"date":"2017-09-22T12:24:50","date_gmt":"2017-09-22T11:24:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1411"},"modified":"2017-09-22T12:24:50","modified_gmt":"2017-09-22T11:24:50","slug":"latest-figures-reveal-more-than-40-million-people-are-living-in-slavery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/latest-figures-reveal-more-than-40-million-people-are-living-in-slavery\/","title":{"rendered":"Latest figures reveal more than 40 million people are living in slavery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Forced marriage is included for first time in worldwide statistics that show \u2018money and debt\u2019 to be at the heart of the exploitation<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 40.3 million people were victims of modern slavery in 2016, a quarter of them children, according to\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.alliance87.org\/#alliance\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">new global slavery statistics released today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The figures, from the UN\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ilo.org\/global\/lang--en\/index.htm\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">International Labour Organisation\u00a0<\/a>(ILO) and the\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walkfreefoundation.org\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Walk Free Foundation,<\/a>\u00a0show 24.9 million people across the world were trapped in forced labour and 15.4 million in forced marriage last year. Children account for 10 million of the overall 40.3m total.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 Estimates of Modern\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/slavery\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Slavery<\/a>\u00a0report calculates that of 24.9 million victims of forced labour, 16 million are thought to be in the private economy, 4.8 million in forced sexual exploitation and 4.1 million in state-sponsored forced labour including mandatory military conscription and agricultural work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is startling about these new estimates is the sheer scale of the modern slave trade and the fact that we have 40 million people across the world in some form of modern slavery is simply not acceptable,\u201d said Fiona David, executive director of global research at the Walk Free Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/sep\/19\/latest-figures-reveal-more-than-40-million-people-are-living-in-slavery<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Forced marriage is included for first time in worldwide statistics that show \u2018money and debt\u2019 to be at the heart of the exploitation An estimated 40.3 million people were victims of modern slavery in 2016, a quarter of them children, according to\u00a0new global slavery statistics released today.
