They say doctor Jumana Nagarwala\u00a0performed female genital mutilation on two seven-year-olds from Minnesota.<\/p>\n<p>The practice of\u00a0FGM\u00a0is illegal in the United States and two others are charged with conspiring to perform the act.\u00a0Nagarwala has pleaded \u201cnot guilty,\u201d and her attorney has said she was performing a religious ritual of the Bohra community, not genital mutilation.<\/p>\n<p>The World Health Organization (WHO) describes female genital mutilation as the partial or total removal of the clitoris and the labia minora. Some of these cuttings go further.<\/p>\n<p>The practice is most common in the western, eastern, and north-eastern regions of Africa, in some countries of the Middle East and Asia, as well as among migrants from these areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zehra Patwa<\/strong>, an activist with the group \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/699671530168678\/\">Speak out on <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/699671530168678\/\">FGM<\/a>,\u201d joined <em>Stateside<\/em> to talk about the practice and the effort of some\u00a0Bohras to end it.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/michiganradio.org\/post\/bohra-activist-against-female-genital-mutilation-says-veil-secrecy-keeps-women-speaking-out<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Federal officials recently filed charges against a suburban Detroit doctor for allegedly performing\u00a0female genital mutilation (FGM)\u00a0on several young girls.
