{"id":1201,"date":"2017-02-14T22:15:41","date_gmt":"2017-02-14T22:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1201"},"modified":"2017-02-14T22:15:41","modified_gmt":"2017-02-14T22:15:41","slug":"west-scotland-msp-mary-fee-calls-for-global-effort-to-end-fgm-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/west-scotland-msp-mary-fee-calls-for-global-effort-to-end-fgm-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"West Scotland MSP Mary Fee calls for global effort to end FGM practice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MSP Mary Fee has called for a global effort to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The West Scotland politician spoke during a debate supporting International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.<\/p>\n<p>In Scotland, it is estimated that 24,000 living in the country today were born in lands that practise FGM and 12 women were killed as a result of so-called honour-based violence, she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the debate, Mrs Fee stated: \u201cThe practice of FGM and honour-based violence is driven by the deep-rooted unequal power relationship between men and women across the globe<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEducation is key to tackling FGM and honour-based violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA grass-roots approach that aims to alter cultural views on FGM might be a slow process, but it is a necessary one and an effective means in the fight to eradicate FGM across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to teach young boys and men that FGM is an extremely dangerous procedure that is not a religious requirement, a prerequisite for marriage or a rite-of-passage ritual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is quite simply an unnecessary, barbaric act that violates women\u2019s and girls\u2019 human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MSP Mary Fee has called for a global effort to end the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM).
