{"id":1056,"date":"2016-01-29T14:38:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T14:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/?p=1056"},"modified":"2022-10-17T15:26:40","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T14:26:40","slug":"ireland-to-outlaw-forced-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.haloproject.org.uk\/blog\/ireland-to-outlaw-forced-marriage\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland to outlaw forced marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Republic of Ireland is set to introduce a new law which criminalises forced marriage.<\/p>\n<p>New legislation proposed by the Department of Justice would make \u201cintentional conduct of luring an adult or a child . . . with the purpose of forcing [them] to enter into a marriage\u201d an indictable offense. <strong>There is currently no specific prohibition against the practice in Irish law<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The new law is expected to be enacted by the end of next year, the <em>Irish Times<\/em> reports. It will come as part of <strong>a new government strategy to deal with sexual, domestic and gender-based violence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Other proposed policies include the <strong>abolition of exemptions for underage marriages<\/strong>. Currently, people under the age of 18 can marry in Ireland with a \u2018Court Exemption Order\u2019. To get one, the couple must demonstrate that their marriage is in their best interests.
