UNICEF Trains Secondary School Teachers On Dangers Of FGM

The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF and the United Nation Population Fund, UNFPA in collaboration with the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development yesterday has commenced the training of partners and educators from the 3 Female Genital Mutilation FGM high burden Local Government Areas of the State to mainstream FGM in their existing Secondary School curriculum.

A victim who is also a secondary school teacher of Akaeze Community Secondary School Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Chidinma during the training said that it was an age long practice inherited from the parents adding that she had to carry out the practice on the children to continue the practice.
According to them; “Every Female child in my house was circumcised and I asked my mother why she got all the three of us circumcised?, she simply answered that it is an age long custom, that her own mother also circumcised her and she didn’t give me any other reason but that it was inherited by her” she said.

Essex girls are at risk of FGM, warn NSPCC

Many girls in Essex have suffered female genital mutilation (FGM), according to a report from the NSPCC.

Figures released by the NHS show 15 women had been seen to have suffered the illegal procedure between January and March of this year in the county.

FGM, which is sometimes known as female circumcision, is an unnecessary and harmful act that is usually carried out on girls aged 15 and under. It is considered an act of child abuse

A spokesman from the NSPCC said: “We know that female genital mutilation is still affecting hundreds of girls in the UK, and these figures show that it continues to effect young people in Essex.

“We would urge those at risk, or any adults worried about them, to speak out and get help.

“Some families who subject their children to female genital mutilation may do so because of cultural norms or that they believe it will help their child improve their life.

“It’s vital that everyone realises FGM serves no purpose, leaves long lasting physical and emotional scars on the victims, and is a form of child abuse.”

The breakdown of the figures shows that many patients were given advice from the NHS.

Children’s charity the NSPCC is currently monitoring hundreds of girls who have been impacted by FGM.

Special Report: Police help save girls from forced marriage and rape

Court orders are being sought to protect Sheffield girls due to be sent abroad and forced to marry men they have never met, where rape, pregnancy and servitude will become a way of life Ancient family traditions are being thrust upon Sheffield girls, who are being sent abroad against their wishes or naively unaware of the hell of forced marriage which awaits them when they arrive.

In a clash of cultures, girls born in Sheffield, educated in Sheffield and leading settled lives in Sheffield, are being taken abroad to marry – often against their will and to ‘husbands’ they have never met before. Some girls know their fate and are pressured into marrying for fear of bringing shame upon their families, but others travel abroad unaware that they may never return, having been promised as a bride since birth or for money. The practice is illegal in Britain, but common in a number of countries, including Pakistan and Bangladesh, and police forces across the country know girls are being forced to marry against their will and are being subjected to rape.

NHS group reveals 20 new cases of FGM in Nottingham

Twenty new cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) have been reported in Nottingham – with the majority of the procedures being carried out on victims under the age of four.

New figures published by NHS Digital on Tuesday (June 6) show that the new cases were recorded between January and March this year.

All 20 victims were pregnant when the FGM was identified by and the majority of cases – 15 – were discovered by a medic carrying out an examination.

The data shows that all of the victims underwent a surgery called deinfibulation to treat some of the problems associated with FGM.

All of the reported victims went on to give birth to daughters and were advised on the dangers – and illegalities – of FGM in a bid to prevent further cases.

According to the data, 10 of the victims were under the age of one when FGM was carried out and five were aged between one and four. The ages of the remaining victims were not provided.

A spokesman for the NSPCC said: “We know that FGM is still affecting hundreds of girls in the UK, and these figures show that it continues to effect young people in the Nottingham area.

“We would urge those at risk, or any adults worried about them, to speak out and get help.

“Some families who subject their children to FGM may do so because of cultural norms or that they believe it will help their child improve their life. It’s vital that everyone realises FGM serves no purpose, leaves long lasting physical and emotional scars on the victims, and is a form of child abuse.”

USA:Child Marriage Survivor: I Was Introduced to Him in the Morning and Handed Over That Night

Sara Tasneem was 15 years old when she was married off to a 28-year old stranger. Her parents were divorced, and her deeply conservative father was a member of a Muslim sect in California. When she went to visit him during high school, “He told me I was going to have to get married and the Sheikh was going to pick who I was going to get married to,” she recalls. “I never questioned my dad, ever.”

Thousands of U.S. teens are married before they turn 18 every year. Sometimes the practice coincides with religious traditions, as conservative Jews, Christians and Muslims often encourage early marriage. But even nonreligious adolescents marry before they’re legal adults, sometimes because of a teen pregnancy. Most states require parental consent or the approval of a judge in order for a minor to get married — but in many cases, the parents are driving the match, and a judge will often defer to the wishes of the parents.

Tasneem’s case illustrates how few protections are available to young brides if their parents are the ones encouraging early marriage. She met her husband the same day as their spiritual marriage ceremony in 1996. “I was introduced to him that morning and I was handed over to him physically that night,” she said. “I remember asking, ‘Where am I going to sleep tonight?’ and they wouldn’t answer me. They just handed me over to this guy that I didn’t know.” She suspects that her husband, who was a new convert to the group, was enticed to the sect by the possibility of marrying a virgin.

Tasneem says her father concealed the marriage from her mother by demanding she tell her mom she was going to live with her dad permanently. “They made me call her and forced me to lie to her on the phone. And for me as a 15 year old, that was horrible,” she recalls, adding that her husband and father stood over her as she made the call. “I didn’t feel like I had the power to stand up to all these adults.”

USA:Michigan ‘genital mutilation’ case will test our country’s political correctness

In February, federal investigators uncovered a Michigan-based network of doctors and others who practice female genital mutilation (FGM) on girls as young as six at medical clinics in the state. FGM is the cutting of a girl’s genitalia with the aim to “purify” her and repress her sexuality. All defendants in the case are members of the Dawoodi Bohra, a religious Muslim group. One of the girls who underwent the procedure was reportedly told that she was going on a “special girls’ trip” to “get the germs out.”

While the victim in this case may find justice in the courtroom, their lives and bodies have been irrevocably changed. Survivors of FGM whom I spoke to for my documentary film Honor Diaries tell of the physical and emotional pain that remains long after the abuse. Sexual intercourse and childbirth become horribly painful and traumatic experiences. Women may have chronic urinary tract infections and are often plagued with depression and other invisible scars.

Police investigate 180 new child sex cases in ‘grooming capital of UK’ as fears grow of another Rochdale

Police are probing almost 200 cases of sexual exploitation in West Yorkshire amid fears of ‘another Rochdale’.

Officers in West Yorkshire Police’s Bradford District have 179 crimes where child sexual offences are a factor on their desks.

The area takes in the small mill town of Keighley – described as the nation’s ‘capital’ of child grooming.

The crimes involve 165 suspects and more than 100 victims.

Last year 12 men were jailed for more than 140 years between them for their part in the abuse of a single victim in Keighley.

The girl was repeatedly raped by the gang in encounters arranged by a violent drug dealer over 13 months between 2011 and 2012, when she was 13.
